Wikipedia is now studying its own representation of knowledge. A recent publication entitled "Wikipedia and the Production of Knowledge" treats the subject of information literacy, hidden assumptions, and the Barthian idea of the text-without-author--all in the context of the vast amount of information Wikipedia makes available to everyone with hardware and an internet link.
As one of the contributors to this publication points out, "As a tertiary source, Wikipedia can only mirror existing hegemonies of information" (Matthew Vetter). The evolution of a global encyclopedia that is counscious of this fact and of many other influences in the production of knowledge will be an important development to watch.
