Congratulations to Stuart M. McManus, Postdoctoral Researcher, whose book manuscript has been solicited by Ideas in Context, a prestigious book series in intellectual history published by Cambridge University Press. This has topped a productive year with articles also forthcoming in leading historical journals, including Hispanic American Historical Review and Estudios de historia novohispana.
McManus's book, Empire of Eloquence uncovers the pivotal role played by the Classical Rhetorical Tradition in building and maintaining the global empires of Spain and Portugal in the centuries between Columbus and the Age of Revolutions. Based on primary research in thirteen countries in Latin America, Europe and Asia, it charts the hitherto unknown global impact of Greco-Roman ideas and their interactions with indigenous forms of knowledge in the first age of globalization.
