Formation of Knowledge MAPSS Program Student Assistant

The Institute seeks a Student Assistant for its MAPSS Formation of Knowledge Concentration. The MAPSS Student Assistant will be able to commit to 6 to 20 hours per week, Monday through Friday, from 8:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. during the academic school year. The Assistant will have the primary responsibility of assisting the Program Manager for Curricular Innovation with various support activities. The Assistant will have a deep intellectual interest in the social sciences and humanities.

Job Description and Responsibilities

The MAPSS Student Assistant will

  • Help research and create resource materials for the Institute’s MAPSS Formation of Knowledge concentrators, as well as for its postdoctoral fellows.
  • Help the Program Manager explore grant opportunities in these and other areas for Institute's constituencies.
  • Mine the University of Chicago online for such resources and explore the web in general for the same purpose.
  • Participate in recruiting webinars and in-person events to share first-hand experience in the MAPSS program.
  • Assist in creating and curating social media content related to the Formation of Knowledge MAPSS concentration.
  • Be present on designated Thursdays from 10:30 to 12 for "Slow Thursdays," and help develop this gathering.
  • Attend other meetings and take notes for follow-up action.
  • Complete special projects as assigned by Institute staff.
  • Perform classroom and kitchen set-up and break-down for MAPSS concentration events hosted in these spaces. This will include set-up of laptop and AV for presentations.
  • Follow emergency and closing procedures of the building to ensure safety and security for the Institute’s MAPSS events.

Qualifications:

  • Current or prior enrollment in MAPSS, Formation of Knowledge concentration preferred
  • Experience conducting EResearch, familiarity with JStor and Google Scholar and other research databases >Comfortable making presentations in person and/or via Zoom
  • Avid use of social media especially Facebook and Twitter
  • Some experience in curation and content production for social media
  • Experience using all applications of Office 365, Google Workplace, and other productivity tools
  • Solid writing skills, critical reading skills, and intellectual curiosity
  • Experience optimizing document design using Adobe Creative Suite or similar tools, a plus.
  • Resourcefulness and the ability to problem-solve
  • Customer service orientation
  • Willingness to learn, be flexible, and tackle both large and small tasks

Time Commitment and Compensation: 

Compensation is $17 per hour for 6-20 hours per week during the 2023-24 academic year. To accommodate course schedules, work hours will be set on a quarterly basis. Course schedules and preferred hours are provided to the Program Manager for Curricular Innovation by Week 1, mutually agreed upon, and finalized by Week 3. For students hired after the start of the academic quarter, schedules and start dates will be set accordingly.

Communications Assistant

Job Description and Responsibilities

The Institute seeks one or more Communications Assistant(s) who can commit between 6 and 20 hours per week, between the hours of 8:30AM and 5:00PM CST Mon-Fri (ideally) during the academic year. These positions support the Institute’s Operations Manager by serving as a digital liaison between the Institute and the public, assisting with and helping plan marketing and social media campaigns, making website updates, managing email communications, creating class and workshop promotions, and helping organize and promote virtual events. The communications support that this position provides is integral to the public-facing aspect of the Institute.

  • The job responsibilities listed below will be shared among a team of Institute Communications Assistants.
  • Contributing to the Institute’s social media and website by drafting creative and engaging content that updates the public on the latest happenings at IFK.
  • Maintaining IFK’s social media platforms including Facebook, LinkedIn, Instagram, Twitter, and Good Reads, and MA Connect.
  • Supporting IFK’s communications with email campaigns, newsletters, and other announcements.
  • Providing input and assistance on the logistical set-up of virtual events hosted by the Institute (classes, workshops, other special events) via Zoom and other hosting platforms.
  • Completing special projects as assigned.

Qualifications

  • Can commit 6-20 hours per week during academic quarters
  • Communications experience
  • Proficiency or experience with graphic design; experience with InDesign a plus
  • Proficiency or experience with video editing software
  • Proficiency with or willingness to learn the tools needed for social media, including LinkedIn, Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, Sprout Social, Expression Engine, and Mailchimp
  • Proficiency in the use of Microsoft Outlook, Word, PowerPoint, Excel, Box,
  • Proficiency with (or willingness to learn) AV setup and other technical support
  • Resourcefulness and the ability to problem-solve
  • Strong written/verbal communication skills
  • Ability to work on multiple projects and see them through to completion
  • Willingness to learn, be flexible, and tackle both large and small tasks
  • Ability and interest to interact professionally with faculty and staff
  • Currently enrolled 1st thru 4th year student

Compensation is $16.00 per hour for 6-20 hours per week during the 2023-24 academic year, with the possibility of renewal. To accommodate course schedules, work hours will be set on a quarterly basis.


Non-Profit Management Intern

Job Description and Responsibilities

6-20 hours per week between the hours of 8:30AM and 5:00PM CST Mon-Fri (ideally) during the academic year. 

Tasks include: maintain administrative calendar, create classroom schedules, prepare meeting materials and post meeting notes, serve as front desk and direct visitors, etc. 

Compensation is $16.00 per hour for 6-20 hours per week during the 2023-24 academic year, with the possibility of renewal. To accommodate course schedules, work hours will be set on a quarterly basis.
